Music and Memories

Recently as I was travelling in the car, I was listening to a radio station that focuses on older music (it’s my age!)  when on came some songs from the mid-eighties. As Phil Collins sang out Against all Odds and the mellow voice of Tracey Chapman rang out, I was transported back in time to the days I worked in the West End photographic shop.

I could literally draw you a detailed picture of the shop, where everything was and into my memory popped the stereo in which we had to keep changing the cassette tape to keep the music going. There was no music on loop back then, we just had a trusty cassette player which once finished we had to turn the cassette over to play the other side; unbelievably I was shocked recently to see that the old cassette is making a comeback, made me think ‘why didn’t I keep that Sony Walkman?’

Are you like me, does music transport you back in time? Whether a joyful or sad music can stir up memories just like photographs (see Well-Being Blog this month)

In the 1980’s and 90’s I recall seeing some amazing artists in concert, I was so fortunate to see Madonna, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Phil Collins (Genesis), Whitney Houston, U2 and many more in what I think was the height of their fame. Each concert a wonderful memory of time spent with sadly some of them long-lost friends now.

Recently as we watched the Brit Awards, I have to say we knew no one and just didn’t enjoy the music (probably as our parents didn’t back in the day). I am not sure about you but looking at today’s artists I do wonder if they will stand the test of time, after all many of those I watched in concert nearly 37 years ago who are indeed still making music today.

So, if you want to take a trip back in time tune in to one of the stations that play the old tunes, I am sure the experience will bring a smile and probably memory or two for you also.
