A Hug in an Envelope
Recently, I found a letter my mum had written to me when I lived in Ireland. Over the years, despite my 22 house moves in 24 years, my mum wrote to me regularly. In the early days, I’d receive weekly updates from home, and I cherished every one.
Recently, when visiting my parents, my mum was preparing to send a letter to my aunt in Cwmbran. She had clipped an article from the local paper that she thought my aunt would enjoy, wrote a personal note, and was mailing it off. Mum explained she liked to send something other than bills or junk mail. I couldn’t agree more!
When I got home one day, I found a parcel from an online shop. At first, I couldn’t remember ordering anything, but it turned out to be a surprise from a dear friend in Cornwall. Inside was a small polar bear with a note—her way of sending me a "hug in a box." As a self-confessed hugger, this thoughtful gift warmed my heart.
All of this got me thinking about how special it is to receive something in the mail that’s not a bill or junk—something someone has put thought into, showing that at a specific moment, they were thinking of you. While we often receive cards and gifts on birthdays or holidays, the unexpected surprises sent throughout the year are even more special.
When friends face tough times, I often send cards, flowers, or little gifts. It doesn’t have to be a hard time, though—I send small surprises whenever I find something perfect for a friend or family member.
Although postage isn’t cheap, a handwritten note or a small gift can make a significant difference to someone’s day. If you're nearby, even dropping a card through someone’s door can bring a smile. In a world full of digital messages, there’s still something magical about the handwritten word.
So, this year, take the time to send a hug in an envelope and brighten someone's day.
